If you have been following this series, then you know we have been talking about healthy hair. We have talked about how imbalances in your thyroid and your sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) can result in hair loss. Well today I want to talk about ferritin and hair loss.
A lot of people have not heard about ferritin but ferritin in the storage form of iron. Most people are aware of iron and how it can affect the body. When your iron levels are low you can experience fatigue, weakness, cold hands / feet, pale skin, brittle nails, and hair loss. Anemia is the medical term for when a person has low levels of iron in their body.
Ferritin is very high in the hair follicles and when our blood is low in iron it steals ferritin from the hair follicles. Low levels of ferritin have been shown to result in thinning hair, hair that breaks off, and ultimately hair loss.
Think you may have low ferritin? Well your physician can run a simple blood test to let you know.
If your levels are low, pick up a good ferritin supplement and get on your way to healthy hair.
